The public supports the idea of politicians presenting opinion and interview programmes on TV news channels - and are increasingly concerned that free speech is under attack. The findings emerged via a new independent poll commissioned by GB News, which comes at the same time as Ofcom, the media regulator, says it will conduct its own research on the growing number of politicians working as hosts on TV news channels. The survey by JL Partners asked 2,119 people whether they felt politicians should be allowed to present opinion and interview programmes on broadcast platforms. When asked whether they supported the idea provided politicians embraced alternative views as per OFCOM’s current guidelines – 43 per cent agreed. If the requirement to embrace other views is removed, support for politicians hosting shows fell slightly to 41 per cent, while 36 per cent said they opposed this. But the margin was even wider when the public was asked about supporting MPs hosting shows where they were “challenged and debated by other guests” - with 49 per cent agreeing and only 21 per cent disagreeing. The polling also showed there is widespread agreement that free speech is under threat and needs to be defended. www.gbnews.com/celebrity/gb-news-survey-politicians-presenting-channels-free-speechThe link doesn't mention that the left are well represented on GB News. Ex Labour MP Stephen Pound is a regular, and is good value. Aaron Bastani co founder of left wing Novara Media and outspoken Corbyn supporter is another regular, as is Benjamin Butterworth, left wing poof who has worked for the Guardian and Indy. There are others, cant remember their names.

It' a GBNews poll and they have politicians presenting the 'news', bit of a conflict there methinks.🤣
As to the 'leftys' they are there to be ridiculed but it never really works.

Cant see what the issue is, David Lammy has done a show on LBC for a while and back in the 80's Ken Livingstone was a presenter on LWT.
Was there any great problem with those?

I have tried watching GB News a few times recently. Honestly I find it quite odd and, with respect, I don't quite get why you watch it. Maybe day time is different but in the evening it comes over as a party political broadcast from the Truss/Johnson/Rees Mogg wing of the tory party /Reform/UKIP. I do find the presenter giving his/her views very disconcerting and it has to be said Dan Wooton is particularly smug. I know it aligns with your political views but doesnt it get a bit dull?
Can't say I am an expert on broadcasting neutrality rules but listening to it I was surprised that the mix of news and presenter opinion, usually without the opposite view being presented or presenter view challenged was allowed.

GB News is definately a centre right broadcaster, but unlike the BBC it welcomes people with opposing opinions and views from across the political spectrum. As I mentioned previously Stephen Pound who was a Labour MP for 22 years is a regular on GB News, as is Aaron Bastani of Novara Media who is very left wing and an enthusiastic Corbyn supporter, you may have heard of Steve Valdez-Symonds? He's from Amnesty International's Refugee and Migrant Rights Programme, and regularly appears on GB News, or Paul Embery from the Fire Brigades Union, very left wing and a regular on GB News. There are left wing Labour supporters on GB News every day, tbf too many in my opinion, and that's probably to counter claims from people like you that GB News is a right wing Tory channel. Centre right GB News gives a far more balanced and unbiased view of news and current affairs than the centre left BBC ever have that's for sure. You will of course disagree, no biggie.

As I say daytime may be different. Evenings honestly to call it unbiased is laughable. But lets pass over that.
Do you not find it really odd for the presenter to read out the news and then start inserting his own opinions into it. Maybe you get used to it after a while but really odd.
to be fair I did hear Farage do one of his programmes - I think it was about climate change - and he was far better with a guest - a genuine exchange of views that was productive.

Like any other channel, news presenters on GB News only present news bulletins, they don't comment on the news or give their own opinions. They present the news then they're off screen and it's back to the programme presenter.

Dont be disingenuous Red. Its a very odd style for a political programme to be talking about current affairs and then for the presenter to give his own views on the subject. The presenters opinions are presented as fact. In fact I cant think of anywhere else that style of presenting happens and have to say I thought it was against the rules for TV.
If they have found a loophole and you want to watch it , I can't say I am overly fussed but I am surprised you don't find it pretty offputting even if you agree with the presenter. Your call though.

I think it is a more honest approach than the BBC, which lies by selection and omission and transmits its point of view by sticking the word 'unproven' in front of any claim it feels is false, while leaving 'unproven' claims, the staff feel are true, unmolested. I would rather take information from someone is earnestly giving me a point of view rather than someone who is pretending to be even handed and not doing so. However, If the BBC went back to being reasonably even handed for political topics, I would probably prefer that.

I don't agree with you re BBC but whatever. Of course Wooton on GB news does pretend he is unbiased - he starts with that strap line before proceeding to give his view on current affairs unchallenged by anyone else with opposite views. Very odd.
Any way personally I find it unwatchable and I think I would even if I agreed with the general thrust - I tend not to listen to party politicals from my side or the other. If that's what you want though - that's fine. Surprised its allowed within the rules though.

The reason the BBC's bias is more pernicious is that is sneaky - as an example, selectively adding in the word 'unproven' only when the staff disagree with a reported claim. It's also publicly funded which makes this bias rather serious I'm fine with opinions - everyone has one of those
