I don't know whether anyone has come across this stuff. It was discovered deep underground near Whitby and is a mineral that is an organic fertiliser. The deposit is worth billions of pounds.
I think it is most succinctly explained by one of the comments.
The way plants work is if they are super-healthy they actually attack weeds by poisoning them their-selves. It's built into the genetics as a survival mechanism because weeds are competing for nutrients and light, so plants know what is growing around them due to chemical messengers. They also pick up infrared as part of the sensory system. The trick is to use the plant's natural mechanisms instead of using chemicals that have these undesirable side effects.
