I see the famous Crooked House built in 1765 has gone up in flames, Britain’s wonkiest pub has been gutted in a huge blaze, just days after it was sold to developers. The 18th-century Crooked House pub in Himley, near Dudley in the West Midlands, was virtually destroyed when fire tore through the isolated building on Saturday night. Fire crews and police responded after reports of the building being on fire emerged at around 10pm. Witnesses said six appliances were at the scene as firefighters struggled to contain the blaze, the cause of which remains unknown and is still being investigated. [Obviously an insurance job] www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/08/06/britains-wonkiest-pub-burns-down/

Not being cynical at all, but I wondered how the developers might get around a grade 2 listed building being in the way of their plans. 🔥 🔥 🔥

I'm sure insurance will look very closely at the fires cause before paying out.
I see the shell of the building has been knocked down against advice of the local council's experts.
The access lane was blocked with piles of earth (which could to be fair have been to keep vandals out or could have been to make it hard for the fire service to attend. )
All does feel very odd.
Hopefully authorities will do all in their power to stop developer making a profit from the site if they have any suspicions of foul play.

West Midlands Mayor Andy Street has called for the Crooked House pub to be “rebuilt brick by brick” after it was demolished following a huge fire over the weekend. link

An insurance job?
Don’t see it myself - insurers are not stupid and know the risks of a derelict isolated property from the local yobs even assuming the owners are clean. Hard to see insurance being placed without very strict conditions which presumably weren’t complied with. Pay out feels unlikely.
Maybe for the value of cleared land - but quick Look on Google maps suggests it’s in the middle of nowhere right next door to some sort of mine/power station. Hardly prime building land at first glance.
Authorities will know who the owners are and from there whether they feel suspicious. Perhaps there is some other explanation there or just vandals?
