There will be huge famine events and Africa will have the begging bowl out again expecting everyone else to solve their self-made problems.

Attenborough states that 75% of the land area that is not permanently covered in ice is currently in use. Wild megafauna that remain following habitat loss to livestock are now only to be found in zoos or in fenced compounds like safari parks under armed guard. There's some wild figures around. Google says 8.7 million species Scientists have estimated that there are around 8.7 million species of plants and animals in existence. However, only around 1.2 million species have been identified and described so far, most of which are insects. But if we've only identified 1.2 million its hard to believe we're making a million of those extinct. Attenborough figure on land use is also perplexing as he describes it as being put to human use. Which could include everything from building a tower block to picking some wild berries while out for a stroll. According to my research. 38% of land is agricultural. Of which 1/3 is crop and 2/3rds grazing, including wild grazing. 10% is ice bound 3% is urbanised, but a more realistic figure including sports fields etc is 11%. |

I read somewhere - I think it might have been in the New Scientist magazine - that some 90% of all land animals today are entirely dependent upon human beings, either as pets or on farms. This is a staggering statistic and if accurate demonstrates the extent to which we as a species have warped and perverted the natural evolution of other species and bent them to our own needs and wants. The rest of life on this planet is increasingly being forced into niches that serve us, or is otherwise dying out. Presumably you mean large land mammals. I don't think insects really rely on us. |

Fact is we don't really want to. We want pretty things, big cars, nice holidays and loads of sugar. We could easily grow our food in multi-storey buildings instead of living in them ourselves.
