New oil and gas fields in the North Sea would produce only enough gas to satisfy the UK’s needs for a few weeks a year, with a minimal impact on energy security, analysis has found. Fields now under consideration would supply at most an additional three weeks of gas a year to the UK, from 2024 to 2050, even if none of the gas was exported. In reality, it is more likely that much of the gas would be exported overseas to the highest bidder, as is currently the case with about 60% of the UK’s gas production. Over the same period, new oilfields would supply at most about five years of oil demand, if none was exported, according to analysis of government data by the campaigning group Uplift. The UK currently exports about 80% of the oil produced in the North Sea. The Guardian Then we re-import it. Since production began in the 1960s to 2014, 42 billion barrels of oil had been extracted from the North Sea, and there is still a potential of 24 billion barrels left remaining there, which is equivalent to about 35 years worth of production, and that is 'known reserves', it is highly likely that unknown reserves are yet to be discovered. The North Sea will remain an important oil/gas reservoir for years to come of that you can be sure. It will take 28 years or so to get the benefits from any new oil and gas fields in the North sea.

This is the same prick who has had over £40 million from JST.......Another I'll say anything to get elected by the majority who think it's a good idea.......It will all change yet again next week after his buddy Dale Vince has had a quite word in his ear.
Smarmer calls Just Stop Oil's demands to 'turn off the taps' in the North Sea 'contemptible' as he distances himself from eco-group - and says Labour would not tear up Rishi Sunak's 100 new drilling licences
Smarmer confirmed a Labour government would not revoke existing licences

I wonder if Labour will return Dale Vince's cash, lol. I'm not holding my breath.

Apologies no link, just watched it on GB News. Just listened to Anneliese Dodds [known in some circles as 'barking mad Doddsy'] being interviewed on College Green. She said signing new oil & gas drilling licences will do nothing other than force energy bills higher, obviously she didn't elaborate. Labour will slowly become less and less electable as we move closer to the next election. I hear that Starmer's already ordered a double-barrelled shotgun so that he can shoot himself in both feet.

We should send engineers around to JSO supporter's houses to cut off their gas first.

Long term energy needs: lots of nuclear. Short term sticking plaster, fossil fuels.

It will take 28 years or so to get the benefits from any new oil and gas fields in the North sea. So says RedRum, the forums petroleum geologist. I've looked at the data of all known reserves and it looks like we are down to our last 20% or if that. Compared to peak production it is only a piddly amount bearing in mind also what is left is not going to be sucked out all in one go but splayed across a fairly long time frame. Obviously it makes total sense to issue licences to get the rest out since high fuel costs mean it is still possible to make a good profit, and the idea every little helps and why would you not.
At the moment the two big rising contributors to our electricity is on and offshore wind. Development in large solar farms has come to a halt in the UK but domestic PV is now picking up after a long plateau. Nuclear has declined a bit with ageing reactor shutdowns and more is imported. Anyway, the two strong contenders are wind and solar. The preferred method of storage is not to store too much but to set up a worldwide supergrid. China is building one as part of the BRI and is going to develop a massive array in the Gobi desert. Radiation is 3x the UK so the trick is on how to transmit power without inuring high losses. The other option is to convert the solar into hydrogen, although my hunch is the supergrid might make this approach redundant. It is guaranteed to be sunny somewhere.

Oh joy - lets become even more reliant on foreign nations for our energy security.
What could possibly go wrong with that.
