Rumour Control states that Khan wants to charge people to drive in London at so much a mile, he apparently has stated after the Court Hearing that he has other plans to put in place more air quality measures.
He is very unlikely to get votes from the residents and business owners that live in the outer Boroughs which outnumber the residents of the inner boroughs, if they are angry enough to actually vote this time he will be gone, Kent Council is now thinking of taking him to Court as well

Some insurance companies are toying with a similar idea, and also with installing equipment to judge driving style and times of day the vehicle is used...

Some years ago young drivers who had passed the driving test to reduce the amount of car insurance charged for coverage you could buy a box of electronics which monitored the car and recorded how they were driving speed etc

As cars get cleaner then that is less revenue for TFL so other measures will be needed - the obvious is pay per mile with no exceptions for EV's. One way or another Khan needs money from motorists to bail out TFL.

I would not be surprised if it does happen

While you pay to tax your car it would be political suicide to also charge a tax for mileage, think that will finish him if nothing else does.

While you pay to tax your car it would be political suicide to also charge a tax for mileage, think that will finish him if nothing else does. “Clean” vehicles currently pay no road fund tax. And the road fund tax rises on other vehicles according to the amount of pollution they produce. ICE vehicles already pay duty on fuel and they also pay road fund tax. If the mileage charge was adopted UK-wide, some tax take from road fund or fuel onto a mileage charge shouldn’t be too complex. It’s also possible to charge drivers who charge EVs at home an extra levy on the electricity they use for charging…

The proportion of low polluting vehicles (currently exempt from the annual road fund tax) is growing. In ten years time they could be in the majority. Like the smoking ban now, compulsory seat belts and crash helmets, the disadvantages and extra costs of running old polluting vehicles are unlikely to occupy most people’s thoughts — but if they do think about it, they’ll probably be grateful…

I have read that EVs are obvioulsy better for non-polluting fuel yet tend to produce more particle pollution from working parts. Might be due to the heavy batteries requiring stronger brakes.

Angela Raynor let the cat out of the bag, even though it's massively unpopular, Labour intend to expand Ulez all over the country. On the bright side, I suppose this is great news for the Tories. You must have been at the Battle of Trafalgar Square then protesting about the extremely unpopular Poll Tax. What with public opinion being so important. You must have really hated Maggie. ah now a jehovahs witness knocked my door to tell me the world was ending because the riot in trafalgar square had happenned. I said WHAT ? There was a riot and i missed it ?? Bugger !!

It's mainly from the tyres - EV's are heavier than their equivalent ICE cars so are more wearing on the tyres, thus more particulate pollution.

That was pretty conclusive. Also, this point at the end which some people still can't fathom.
