The Dutch government is on the brink of collapse over plans to restrict migration. Mark Rutte, the prime minister, wants to limit the ability of asylum seekers to bring their families to the Netherlands but his plans have infuriated two of the four parties in the ruling coalition of conservatives and liberals. Talks on Friday to salvage the government failed to resolve the impasse after the plan was rejected by important members of Mr Rutte’s cabinet on Wednesday and Thursday. Local media has reported that Mr Rutte, the longest-serving prime minister in Dutch history, is willing to let the government fall if an agreement is not reached. “We are in a process, in the cabinet, to reach an agreement on migration. That is a step-by-step process. And tonight was a step,” Mr Rutte told reporters after talks ended in failure at 1.45am on Friday morning. ‘He will blow up the cabinet’ “If Rutte does not withdraw his demand, he will blow up the cabinet,” one liberal cabinet minister told the De Telegraaf newspaper. The row has exposed deep divisions between the liberal D66 and centrist Christian Union, which oppose the crackdown and Mr Rutte’s VVD and the Christian Democrats. Mr Rutte has been accused of “pissing off” his deputy Sigrid Kaag, the D66 leader, after trying to push through the plan in the face of liberal opposition in the coalition, which is the fourth he has led. link

Red, you're always complaining about the minority ruling the majority. Well, that's literally the case under the current system. Boris et al got 43% of the vote, yet they have ruled over the 57%. If you think that's okay, then fine; but stop complaining about the minority getting its way over the majority.

It's still a minority. You're always moaning about the minority ruling the majority. Turns out, that's your preferred position. And just so you know: the definition of democracy varies from country to country. In other European countries, a situation where a minority rules over the majority is not democracy.

It would appear that you don't understand how first past the post works, this is unsurprising. As a woke €urophile you will be used to being told who your president is, however in this country we do it differently. It's called democracy, you wouldn't understand.

Yes, minority rule is called democracy in the UK. It isn't in the rest of Europe. In the rest of Europe, a government must represent 50% plus of the votes cast. In short, a government is made up of the majority. I wouldn't mind but you never shut up about how the minority rules the majority in the UK. Now, here you are actually supporting that and ridiculing countries that go out of their way to ensure actual majority rule. Make up your mind.

The UK is also the only country to leave the EU, coincidence?

Einy, ffs man (assumption) you know how our electoral system works, the only reason you and the EU are pissed off with it is because FPTP provided an escape from the EU, an escape that any state with PR could never have which is why the EU love PR.

It's not nearly as complicated as that, Red. You regularly complain that the UK is being ruled by a minority. Fair enough? You do, don't you? Now, here you are defending that position. I'm just pointing out the contradiction.
