In the first couple of years of membership of the EEC, a trade surplus became a deficit, unemployment soared, EEC imposed protectionism fucked up our relationships with the Commonwealth and the USA reducing our trade with both.
The optimism of 1975 simply resulted in an overvalued pound and more industrial decline.
Thank goodness we've left the failed experiment that is now the EU.

Half a million jobs were lost in the first two years of EEC membership. By 1978, 1.5 million were unemployed.
The trade deficit got worse and worse. Fucking glad to be out.
