Oh I dont know, I think that may be a tad harsh Vin. Like the UK, France has changed more in the past 20 years than it has in the past 200 years, not that you would know unless you were there. The French government certainly don't talk about the fact that the French people do not like being overrun with immigrants. It's why the EU is not popular in France and is also why the French will never be allowed a referendum. As I've said before, the EU survives inspite of democracy, not because of it.

Paris has seen yet more rioting. A week ago, the watch dog over the Fr pension systems announced that the reforms pushed through parliament by Emm Mac and his party will not close the pensions deficit, as was promised. Instead, there will be a 5 to 8 E billion deficit projected beyond 2030. And the systems still remains in long-term deficit. You can feel such tension that anything will ignite sparks.
Rioting and looting spreads across France and into Belgium after 'execution' killing of teenage driver: Fury at President Micron as he parties with Elton John as his country burns A third night of mayhem saw violent clashes spreading across Europe last night Micron was criticised by an MEP for 'applauding' John while Paris was on fire
Rioting and looting spread across Europe last night after the 'execution' killing of a teenager in Paris - as pictures emerged of President Emmanuel Micron partying with Elton John while his country burnt, triggering a furious backlash.
Micron was filmed at Paris's Accor Arena on Wednesday evening, watching the singer on his farewell tour, while rioters caused mayhem in the capital following the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old identified as Nahel on Tuesday.
The French President was snapped arm in arm with the legendary 76-year-old artist - who he bestowed France's Legion of Honour award - alongside his wife Brigitte.
But while Micron was hobnobbing backstage, police were locked in fierce clashes with protesters, making 150 arrests nationwide - as public anger spilled out onto the streets of France's major cities for a third night.

Protesters torched cars, barricaded roads and hurled projectiles at police. Other rioters scrawled 'Vengeance for Nahel' across buildings and bus shelters as a bank was set ablaze.
And in a fresh escalation of the chaos, violent clashes reportedly spread into the Belgium capital of Brussels, amid fears further protests could spread to other European capitals.
In a desperate attempt to quell the civil unarrest, some 40,000 French cops are today being deployed nationwide.

So much for life in the EU being idyllic.

Jonksy Blimey ...dear old Elton must be nearly as old as Mrs.Macron ! But back to the topic, and I've not watched any of the coverage of the riots, but I'm reading suggestions that to stay inside the parameters of French Law, the cops have to give a couple of reasonably loud warnings, and after that they're permitted to blow your head off. Let's hope the French aren't able to dip into some EU contingency fund, still stuffed with British taxpayers money, in order to fund repairs after the carnage and destruction.

No one has ever said life in the EU is idyllic. Vinny's post is a perfect examole of a strawman comment.
There is a long history of adversity between the police and the banliues where the mixed population live (in general) It goes back to colonial issues, opportunities for those whose background is not mainland France even though France allows the Outre Mer seats in the Assemblee General. I am happy to admit there is not enough investment there but their geography makes it difficult.
France like every other country is trying to rebalance its economy after Covid. But the span of left right conviction is wider than in the UK.
Lastly France is sensitive to NOT allowing the police too much trigger happy power and looks to the USA as the example to clearly avoid.
Never mind . It will soon be August and everyone will go on holiday.

Thanks for boosting this thread and sharing the sad news that life in the EU is not idyllic.

Macron not doing himself any favours by blaming the violence on Social Media and Computer games - no wonder his approval ratings are through the floor..

The French police do not fuck about. And they don't apologise for it.
I wish that ours were more like theirs.

There is a huge amount of drug related traffic that passes through the various seabords from North Africa, which has virtually no controls in place, and people smuggling, and migration issues.
I have sympathy for the pressures the Frenxh border securities have.
But i have NO sympathy for incidents like this.
Unfortunately it has become The Key that has unlocked the voice of anyone who has any complaint against the government, from retirement age to immigration to race relations. All the complaints come together in one expression, as did the Gilets Jaunes.
I suspect August will diffuse the action.
I do find it a pity that with all the conflicting issues in the UK everyone stays at home and complains to the telly.

If it involves desecrating Holocaust memorials I would rather they stayed at home..

I met a pleasant French lady today. She's glad she left France because she no longer feels safe there. Going by the latest riots one can see why.

No reason to leave France. There is zero violence in most of it. If she has to live in a big city she has been as close to violence as if she lived in any other big city.

All they had to do was use a stinger. It wasn't like this prat was armed like Mark Duggan or Yassar Yaqub were.
Sure, he was a dick for trying to drive off, instead of doing as requested, but the French rozzers overreacted big time.
