A brief glance at the election results of the past fifty years will reveal just how sensible it really is.

Prior to the 1832 Reform Act fewer than five per cent of the population had a vote. No woman did, and the requirement to be a forty shilling freeholder excluded nine out of ten men.

In the aftermath of the great reform bill the member for Old Sarum was indeed ejected from the house and university constituencies became a thing of the past but students to this day have two votes one in the place they live at home and another if they choose to take it at their university residence and while it is only legal to vote in both for local elections no checks are made nationwide to prevent a person voting twice and no one boasting of having done it has been arrested for it.

It would be many more years before financial considerations were removed from the requirement to have a vote and as i have pointed out the change from a requirement to own land to one that you owned property on your land or someone else's certainly enfranchised the wealthy in London it did not do so in the same measure outside London as houses were often cheaper than the threshold. Whether those implementing this law knew that and acted deliberately, or overlooked it, not caring, i leave to you to decide.

When the property qualification was dropped, the electoral boundaries were, and have ever since, been rigged to ensure almost all constituencies bar a handful are overwhelmingly one or other party’s to claim by right, allowing their candidate to ignore the residents not of their viewpoint.

The few constituencies where it is genuinely too close to call are where you want to live if you seek domination in politics as only those residents have the power to sway things.
