Gun culture in the US is like no country in the world, I mean in how many countries can you go shopping to a supermarket and buy a gun? Yes it's all protected by the bill of rights but it's taken totally out of context today, don't you think. The second amendment was penned in 1791 and although hailed by some as the bastion of freedom to bear arms, it had one major flaw. It's didn't stipulate muskets, in 1791 no one envisaged fully auto assault rifles. Boy, was that an error. And btw, apologies are unnecessary Columbia, is awash with firearms, Pakistan blacksmiths and tin bashers will make any firearm you want, Afghanistan even young boys will own carry an AK47, but going back to the man the Police shot, it turns out he had Mental Health issues he had damaged cars in the car park and windows had three knives, and carrying a cat in a bag, it sounds that he had completely lost it, they tried to bring him down by less lethal means even a stun grenade , taser even a baton round , they were left with no choice. It certainly is a major global problem. I only pulled the USA into the equation as it is the only other country that I can speak about with any authority on the subject as my partners parents own a considerable sized ranch where I hold a collection of firearms. I am not sure what the facination is with these lead spraying hosepipes in the USA, many people will go out and purchase an assault rifle and then go on to spend 4 or 5 times more on their initial investment customishing the weapon and in trying to make it more accurate. You can walk into any US gunstore and purchase a bolt action rifle which can hold 5 to 10 rounds depending on the calibre which will shoot far below the cherished one minute of angle even using factory ammo. And yes I agree with your other post about our armed police officers, I have held a UK FAC for ni-on 40 years and used to go shooting with a police officer who was a police marksman and I know the very robust conditions that apply to our permited gun carrying officers. We used to go to the military ranges at Plymouth and to the police ranges at Exeter together but that sadly stopped after Michael Ryan went off on one in Hungerford and from that day forward no civillians were allowed to use military or police ranges.

I agree on the States you can buy all sorts of firearms in some states you can openly carry a firearm in public, and in others can with the right paperwork a concealed firearm I used to own Section 1 Firearms two pistols before the ban came in, now I just have a shotgun for clays mainly but getting too old and my reactions are not what they once were, there are an awful lot of illegally held firearms in the UK I am surprised we have not had a terror attack with automatic weapons used hopefully that will not happen, all smuggled in.

Oh and just as a footnote the only country in the world that seems to have far less gun crimes are Switzerland where every member of their society who are not under their mental health regulations get a gun at the age of 18 and become a member of the state malicia. That's true. They are required to keep the weapon they were issued with at home. However, they are not issued with ammunition to take home AFAIA.

Yes I think the law about the ammo was brought in about 2001 when they had a mass killing that killed 14 people. Also they unified the law across the country as certain areas had their own interpretations of the laws and now the same law applies all across the Swiss nation.

That is so tue, Take Texas if you carry a pistol you must wear it on full display on your hip yet the next State of Tennesse if you carry a pisol you have to have it concealed in a shoulder holster.
Yes of course and we lost our rights to own pistols just after the Dunblane massacre. And there are an awfull lot of illegaly held firearms out there we seem lucky so far that there has not been a massacre. Of course the last one we had in the UK was in this neck of the woods at Plymouth and the powers at the time allowed the return of the guns taken from a person who had a known mental issue. I think now anyone who have had their firearms taken from them will ever be allowed get them back again.
